🦔 Helping Hedgehogs & Wildlife in Extreme Heat 🌿

With temperatures remaining high, our local wildlife is under real pressure. Hedgehogs, birds, bats, insects and even small mammals struggle to find enough natural food and water when the ground dries out and natural sources disappear. A few simple actions from us can make a huge difference to their survival.

🌡️ Why this weather is so dangerous

  • Water sources evaporate quickly, leaving hedgehogs dehydrated and exhausted.
  • Insects and natural forage decline, meaning hedgehogs can’t find enough to eat.
  • Hot, dry conditions force wildlife to travel further, increasing the risk of road accidents and predation.

🦔 What you can do today

  • Put out shallow dishes of fresh water in shaded spots. Hedgehogs can’t climb steep sides, so low bowls are ideal.
  • Offer meaty cat or dog food, or specialist hedgehog food. Avoid fish-based food and never give milk.
  • Place water and food near cover (hedges, shrubs, quiet corners) so wildlife feels safe approaching.
  • Refresh water morning and evening in this heat it evaporates or becomes dirty quickly.
  • Create cool refuges by leaving areas of your garden wild, shaded, or damp.

🌼 Small actions, big impact

These simple steps help hedgehogs stay hydrated, maintain their energy, and avoid dangerous long-distance searches for food. They also support birds, insects, and other small creatures who are all feeling the strain of this extreme weather.

A little kindness in our gardens keeps our wildlife thriving even in the toughest conditions. 🌿🦔

Here are some videos to show how much our wildlife appreciates our help (even if they cannot say so).
